Second Annual Taste of Millington Is Bigger and Better For the second year in a row, area residents turned out by the hundreds to experience a Taste of Millington. Sponsored by the Millington Rotary Club and Patriot Bank, this year’s event offered samplings from 28 area restaurants, an increase of eight from 20 restaurants a year ago. The large crowd also enjoyed the increase in space and the number of tables and chairs at the Navy’s North 82 Gym/Hanger, the site of the April 8th event. Guests were impressed immediately with the elegant entryway and then made their way to the different booths that offered everything from fried pickles to Black Angus steak to burritos and guacamole, Banky’s cakes and do-nuts, fried green beans (fried green beans??? well, we are in the South!) chicken wings, spicy hush puppies, fried pies, turkey and dressing, ice cream, fried catfish, chicken parmesan, BBQ ribs, fried chicken, and peanut butter pie. The evening was completed by a variety of musical entertainment from country to Celtic. Proceeds benefit the Rotary Club’s local scholarships and literacy programs. Congratulations Vinegar Jim’s of Arlington, TN for winning the Patriot Bank People’s Choice Award!
Special Feature Covington Boy Gets Encouragement to Follow His Dream of Being an “American Soldier” September 11, 2001 will forever be remembered as a day of tragedy and loss in America, but for the family of Cody Wyatt Strickland, it marked the beginning of a new life. Cody was one of two babies born at Methodist North Hospital in Memphis, TN during the attacks and since his mother had been told by her physician she would never have children, Cody was considered a “miracle baby”. His family has informed him of the events of 9/11 in hope that he would understand that his special day was a day of tragedy for so many others. Cody has decided his dream is to be an “American Soldier” and on March 14, 2008, he was able to have that dream encouraged by members of the U.S. military. Cody and his family went to La Huazteca restaurant in Covington, TN to eat and while they were waiting, several soldiers came in. Cody asked his mother if she would provide him with paper and a pen so that he might ask them for their autographs and when she did, he went to their table and asked each of them to sign their name. The soldiers were happy to comply and conversed with him while he was waiting. Cody informed them of his birthday and his plans to be an “American Soldier” when he grows up. By this time, others dining in the restaurant stopped to watch this amazing display of patriotism from such a young boy. When the signing was completed, one of the soldiers removed a pin from his uniform and began to explain to Cody what the symbol represented and proceeded to pin it to Cody’s shirt. Cody stood wide-eyed and amazed as three other soldiers removed patches from their uniforms, explained their significance and gave them to Cody to keep for his own. Cody later described the event as “awesome”. Cody Strickland and his family would like to extend a special thank you to the local hometown heroes from National Guard Unit B Battery RFS / 1278th ACR in Covington who were sensitive to a little boy with a big dream. May the Lord bless and keep you as you continue to serve and provide the freedom we as Americans enjoy today. Cody Strickland is the son of Clay and Sara Honeycutt of Covington and Jeremiah Strickland of Atoka. Cody’s grandparents are Tim and Betty Honeycutt of Brighton, Tom and Candi Strickland of Brighton, and Lendal and Janet Brodrick of Piggott, AR.
